Conflict and Human Rights
Building on its continued endeavor to stimulate discourse on the nature of transitional justice and provide victims with spaces to tell truths and seek justice for the war-related crimes, AHRDO has
begun to use TJ theatre play ‘AH 7808’ in Dari and Pashto, which will be performed in provinces of Kabul, Nangarhar, Herat, Balkh, and Bamyan. The primary objective of this project is to raise awareness among the victims, women and youth on the past crimes and the present impunity. This will also enable different civil society and human rights actors and especially victims of human rights abuses to make informed decisions on how to engage with the past and actively participate and critically represent citizens in Afghanistan’s fragile democracy. This would thus be a good opportunity for them to discuss the issue of reconciliation with the Taliban whose regime indiscriminately victimized and violated the human rights of the Afghan people. The Afghan government Action Plan on peace, Reconciliation and Justice also include the Taliban period but there is a risk that perpetrators of human rights abuses from the Taliban regime might be given immunity as part of efforts to stabilize the country. Activities under this project include: 1. 5 performances of the TJ theatre play ‘AH 7808’ in Dari and Pashtu in Kabul, Jalalabad, Herat, Mazar, and Bamyan, to raise awareness on transitional Justice, reconciliation with special focus on youth and women. 2. 6 group discussions with the AH 7808 Play audience on TJ, reconciliation and concrete recommendation on how to move TJ forward in Afghanistan. These discussions shall take place in the end of each performance with the victims, members of civil societies, women rights groups and ordinary Afghans. 3. Prepare 400 questionnaires with specific questions for the victims, civil societies, women, tribal elders and the ordinary Afghans. Expected Results 1. The successful performances of the ‘AH 7808’ will raise awareness on past human rights violations and raise discussion dialogue on how to deal with past and find ways to move forward in the current political context of Afghanistan. 2. Produce a report/policy paper with the updated demands of victims with the regard to the TJ process in general and the issue of reconciliation in particular that come out of the questionnaires filled out. |
